One common reasons why people avoid physiotherapy treatments is the fear of what it may cost. Fortunately, physiotherapy is often much more affordable than people think it is. Today, we will examine what physiotherapy typically costs and what can affect that cost.

What Affects The Cost Of Physiotherapy?

There are two main factors that affect the cost of a physiotherapy treatment. These are:

  • How long will your appointments be?
  • How many appointments will you require?

How Long Are Your Appointments?

Physiotherapists typically charge in 15 minutes increments so the longer the appointment, the more costly your treatment will be. Physiotherapy treatments can vary in length due to several different factors. Initial assessments, for example, are typically longer than follow up appointments and will therefore cost a little more than an average appointment will.

The nature of number of issues being treated will also affect the length of your appointment. If you have one relatively minor issue that needs treatment, the appointment will be relatively short. If you have several issues that require treatment, your appointment may need to be an hour or more in length.

How Many Appointments Will You Require?

Probably the biggest factor when it comes to the total cost of a physiotherapy treatment is the total number of treatments that are required to solve your issue.

When determining how many appointments will be required to solve an issue, your physio will first determine the severity of the issue. Simply put, the more severe the injury, the more frequently you will need to get treatment. A relatively minor issue, for example, might only require an a few appointments spread out over the course of a month. Another, more serious, issue may require several appointments per month for multiple months to fully treat.

Another factor that affects the number of appointments that you will require is whether you have an acute or chronic issue. Acute pain is way faster to treat and handle than chronic pain.

Acute injuries like joint sprains, muscle pulls, and sports injuries may take 3-5 sessions of physiotherapy treatment, depending on the severity of the injury. Chronic pains like chronic low back, neck pains, chronic cervicogenic headaches, or severe arthritic joints might take anywhere from 6-10 sessions before you even feel relief. What’s the solution? Seek medical help as soon as you feel pain.

How Much Does Physiotherapy Cost?

So how much will physiotherapy cost you? Physiotherapy treatment typically range between $50 and $100 per session, depending on the length of the session. Depending on the severity of the issue that is being treated, you may need as few as 3 sessions or as many as “x”. When considering the costs of physiotherapy it is also worth checking into your benefits coverage. Most plans will cover anywhere between $350 and $750 in yearly physiotherapy costs and don’t require a doctor’s note to get coverage.
